Pastor Mendle Adams
Responding to a perceived call to ministry, Pastor Mendle Adams attended Bible College in Frankfort, IN; received his undergraduate degree from Indiana Wesleyan University in Marion, IN; and his seminary degree from Christian Theological Seminary of Indianapolis, IN. He also did post graduate work at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, MI and at Harvard University in Cambridge, MA. Pastor Adams is listed in Who's Who.
Together, Mendle and his wife Naomi Ruth Williams Adams have been activists in Equal Rights, Human Rights, Interfaith Dialogue and Spirituality, as well as Environmental causes. Their ministries have included churches in Indiana, North Dakota, Kansas, Oklahoma and Kentucky as well as Ohio. They have four children, 15 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren, and have been married since 1957.
Mendle and Ruth moved to Pleasant Ridge form Union, KY where they were founders of the High Point Faith Community [UCC]. Prior to moving to the Greater Cincinnati Area Mendle was the ecumenical Campus Chaplain at Oklahoma State University in Stillwater, OK.
The Adams family affirms their diverse religious and ethnic heritages, which include English, Appalachian, and Cherokee ancestors. Mendle's Native American name is Wawatasi, which means literally "lightning bug" or bearer of the light. Mendle is a member of the Racial Justice Youth Ministry Advisory Council for the United Churches of Christ in Greater Cincinnati. In addition he is a member of the national board of directors of The Consent of the Governed; and the local chapter of The Interfaith Alliance. He holds membership in the American Civil Liberties Union and the Southern Poverty Law Center.
Having served as pastor of St. Peter's United Church of Christ since 1997, Mendle is noted for his civic involvement, his infectious laugh, his commitment to social justice, and his creative problem solving skills.
In his Who's Who bio Mendle remembers the charge given him in 1967 when he was ordained a deacon by Methodist Bishop Richard Raines. "Your calling is where ever your ability intersects human needs." His sermons have been described as "academically grounded, biblically faithful, currently relevant and spiritually nurturing."
